Happy Birthday!

Why worry…

Please forgive this moment of reflection. But after that, you’ll get something that, at the very least, will make you smile.

This past Wednesday, a woman told me that she’d placed a classified ad in our local newspaper that said, “Live For The Moment”. Something she does every so often, and not with the same quote. Her story made me reflect back to the following.

My father’s Birthday is today, August 25th, born in1936. He’s not around today, but this story about him lives on.

When my dad was seventeen years old he worked for Barneys New York in Manhattan. For those who don’t know, Barneys is an upscale clothing store. I’m not sure what Barneys saw in this young man, but hire him they did.

This teenager had the presence of mind to acquire business cards. (Probably to impress anyone who would take a look.) But it’s the back of those cards that I remember, and much to my chagrin I’ve long since lost the few I had.

The back of my dad’s business card was printed this old poem:

Why Worry?

There only two reasons to worry. You’re healthy or not healthy.

If you’re healthy, there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re not healthy, there are two reasons to worry. You’re going to get well, or you’re not going to get well.

If you’re going to get well, there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re not going to get well, there are two reasons to worry. You’re going to die or you’re not going to die.

If you’re not going to die, there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re going to die, there are two reasons to worry. You’re going to heaven, or you’re not going to heaven.

If you’re going to heaven, there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re not going to heaven, you’ll be so damn busy shaking hands with old friends you won’t have time to worry.

So, why worry!

Happy Birthday, Dad.
